Guayabo National Monument is located northwest of the city of Turrialba, in the District of Santa Teresita in the canton of Turrialba, province of Cartago. Approximately 20 hectares of the protected area includes the archaeological site, which consists of a set of pre-hispanic architectural structures developed in – river boulders -, same that was built over a period of time that falls somewhere between 1000 BC and 1400 AD; for a prolonged occupation of about 2400 years. – SINAC

What to expect

Veiled in the shadow of the Turrialba Volcano, like a mythical “lost city” from a storybook, lies to mysterious ancient city that was home to over 10,000 people who seemed to have mysteriously vanished just before the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century. This region, known as Guayabo National Monument, is Costa Rica’s most important archaeological site and it’s only named National Monument.

A guide will walk you through the park while explaining the findings of the excavations and the history of the people that once lived there. Your guide will show you around this ancient area, which is geographically the perfect center-point of all of the Americas. Experience these ancient ruins in Costa Rica that hold a world of mysteries and unanswered questions.
